Who was Hikaru Genji? What moved the author to create such character? Was it work of fiction? Or simply drawn from Shibuku's experience?
This is the mystery Genji Monogatari : Sennen no Nazo (2011) try to explore, not by the fact but rather in the imagination of the audience.
Tale of Genji perhaps is the first novel known to the modern world, written by a noble women and lady-in-waiting during Heain period: Murasaki Shibuku.
Murasaki's Genji would have been a successor if he was not half noble. The fact that he was also handsome and popular, somehow didn't garner him much support from the court to be in line as the next emperor. He must have been left frustrated. To make thing worst, he fell in love with the emperor's concubine whom he grew fond since he was a little.
*Susah jugak jadik pompuan cantik ni yek... Budak kecik pun jatuh chenta*
The romance that Genji can't attain he acted out as Kasanova. This led to tragedy, some death, some fled. Hardly any thing new here eh?
To me the film was just a feast to the eye. I longingly wanted to see people in Heian period's costume again, in what I lack lately. This film answered my prayer rather than the finding the mystery surrounding Genji, Shibuku and how it come about.
The sound of kimono's rustling underneath the flowing black jet hair transported me back to some place far, far away. Far from reality. Far from my own. If any thing, paused me from thinking about the present. At least a little over than two hours... Ngeee...
